Cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming on family members, and friends, as it is for you. It can change relationships in unexpected ways. Children's parents who are diagnosed with cancer are more likely to experience increases in general levels of distress and anxiety. They may experience changes in mood as well as their self esteem. Children may have a tendency to act out their distress in their behavior with others. When a child experiences the death of a parent the emotional trauma can be devastating. Losing a parent at a young age would make the child feel helpless and even “different” from others. While losing a parent, or parents at a young age is hard, but so is changing the family structure at these times is not a good thing either.
